Toiday was the day, 182 years ago that the crew and prisoners on the Amphitrite met their end. Here in the UK as I write the rain is bucketing down, as it often does as the summer season changes into Autumn. But 182 years ago, it wasn't just raining - a hurricane ravaged the coast. (You can still see results in the massive sand-dunes that were blown up on the Gower coast in South Wales)
Alas, only 3 survived the wreck - and it shouldn't have happened this way. There was enough time, enough help, enough goodwill to get everyone off the doomed ship. But pride, poor judgment and weakness got in the way.
For the women of the Amphitrite, 182 years ago, this was their last day on earth.
